Things We Saw Today: Let’s Ruin Dining Out for Mitch McConnell

As days go by and the Trump administration continues to shred the values we hold dear, it is easy to feel helpless and powerless. These are dark times, where The Powers That Be are committed to keeping marginalized people disenfranchised. One such power is Senate Majority Leader/Turtle Who Wishes He Were a Real Boy Mitch McConnell. There is perhaps no other political figure in American history who has done more damage to our political system than McConnell, but that’s an article for another day.

On Friday, the senator and his wife, Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, were dining at Havana Rumba in Louisville, Kentucky when he was accosted by an angry protester. The man yelled at the couple, saying “Why don’t you get out of here? Why don’t you leave the entire country?” as other diners and the restaurant staff tried to quiet him. As the news broke, people from both sides of the aisle once again made calls for “civility” and criticized the protester.

But why though? Why should we be civil to the people who are systematically making life worse for Americans? The same people who demand civility over McConnell’s right to a burrito are the same people who stay silent when children are separated at the border from their parents and placed in detention camps. Many people took to social media to call out the “civility” argument once and for all and the hypocrisy inherent in the argument.

For all the damage McConnell and his ilk have caused, I hope they never eat a peaceful meal out again for the rest of their lives.
